About Abrilla O. Robinson

Abrilla O. Robinson is a Michigan native, born and raised in Highland Park, where she attended Catholic school for 12 years, graduating from St. Martin DePorres High School. She later pursued higher education at Highland Park Community College and the Center for Creative Arts and Studies College of Design, majoring in Advertising. Early in her career, Abrilla worked at AC Delco, a division of General Motors Corporation at the iconic Renaissance Center in Detroit. 

In 1986, she relocated to Durham, North Carolina, where she quickly became a driving force in environmental advocacy. As the Recycling Coordinator for SunShares, a nonprofit serving the City of Durham and the Town of Cary, Abrilla recruited over 300 volunteers and educated more than 40,000 residents on the importance of recycling. With decades of leadership in environmental justice, Abrilla is best known as the founder of Minorities in Recycling and Environmental Management (MREM) and the architect of several national recycling initiatives. Her groundbreaking work has empowered underserved communities, influenced public policy, and earned recognition from both state and national organizations. Abrilla continues to serve as a mentor, speaker, and visionary leader committed to advancing environmental sustainability and equity.
